What Is Masculinity
What is this seemingly outdated concept of masculinity?
And is it meant to be challenged or accepted?
Why does this correlate with hetero’ or homosexuality?
Us, as males, do we try to change perceptions or go with the expected
Normalcy is the usual, it conforms to the standard; the state of duplication, repetition and imitation
So I ask, do we think about these ideas or just do whatever?
Are we allowed to talk about it, and get into deep discussions?
I often think about perceptions of my fellow man and how it affects us, whether bad or for the better
We label sensitive, decent guys as “nice guys,” who end up with the short end of the stick, “just friends”
Or some people take it left and even go so far as to think these nice qualities is a sign of flirting
When it’s merely respect and kindness, and nothing more, nothing less
Others perceive these nice qualities as phony, a lie, or even consider these to be traits of homosexuality
“You’re too nice, you’re not exciting, you’re a prude,”
Then we move on to the “manly men”
The aggressive, vulgar and obnoxious kind of dude
He’ll do whatever he can to get into a lady’s undergarments
But why do some females clamor for this type of man?
It’s more than “excitement;” it has to be something psychological
And why would they choose this cat while “the nice guys finish last?”
These are perceptions of most “nice guys,” and these thoughts, undeniable
Don’t front, when you say you want a nice guy, why do you go after the bad?
What happened to you want something real, a guy who cares for you and loves you?
When you passed on that guy and went to the “manlier” man?
Then as you build a “relationship,” you end up playing the fool?
I have so many questions yet no answers
And why can’t a male be best friends with another, as his brother
Without being labeled as something silly as a bromance?
And in fear of being labeled as something of this manner,
Guys won’t open up and be real with each other without some fool labeling it a romance
‘Cause now you’re put in one box, you’re straight, you’re gay
But what is masculinity, and why doesn’t someone question it?
Especially when this line isn’t black or white, but grey…….
